What really struck and had me glued and wanting for more about the book is the never-ending twist of outcomes. Dealing one problem leads to an onset of another, much worse, dilemma. It’s totally unpredictable and that is a good thing. The plot involves some time traveling and history changing, but it does not compromise the flow. Karen Chance really did a brilliant job interconnecting the events and characters.

Among the books I’ve read, so far, this series championed “The-series-with-the-most-supernatural-characters” award. There are the usual supes- vampires, werewolves and ghosts; the uncommon are the mages and golems and withces, the gargoyles, the graeaes, some nasty demons and rakshasas and incubi, the otherworldly feys and dragons, even Apollo. You’re right to assume it’s one hell of a ride – a supes-packed, exciting one.

So who’s she? Cassandra “Cassie” Palmer is a clairvoyant and a seer. She grew in a vampire court under the the vampire master Antonio. She’s oblivious to the fact that Tony’s liable for her parents’ murder – a mage father and a sibyl mother. He did so in order to manipulate and take advantage of Cassie’s abilities. Later, she found out about Tony’s using her for his illegal intentions and of her parents’ death. She eventually left the court.

At 17, she bought a jewelry from a pawnshop which was actually haunted by a ghost named Billy Joe. He is her most trusted sidekick and friend. While, living alone and hiding from Tony’s thugs, she met and took in a handsome street guy named Tomas, who lived with her ever since for six months. They actually got along just fine until she learned that he was actually a first level master vampire in human disguise instructed to keep an eye on her. They actually had established some chemistry but after knowing, she felt betrayed.

Back from the court, Cassie had befriended Rafe (the famous Italian painter, Raphael) since her childhood. Tony had him paint little Cassie’s room way back then, which he actually enjoyed doing. He is the closest to a family she’s got.

Tony and Rafe’s master, Mircea Basarab did also regularly visit Cassie in court. He was a Romanian Prince and brother to Radu and Vlad (Dracula). Since childhood, Cassie had fondness to the utterly gorgeous first level master vampire. He is a member and the chief negotiator of the North American Vampire Senate. He had protected Cassie since meeting her for his belief that she soon will become Pythia, a chief seer who’s said to have gained its power from Apollo’s himself.

Her relationship with Mircea had gone haywire due to a spell gone wild. They feel srtongly for each other – intimately and passionately. She is his woman; he is her man. She wanted to trust Mircea despite the apprehension of barely knowing the real him.

During her quest to counterspell a geiss, she was accompanied by John Pritkin,  a war mage (a partner later) sworn to her . Pritkin is one of his kind – a half-incubus. His father was a demon lord and he’s formerly known as Merlin (only she knows about both). At first, he totally despise her likelihood to become Pythia and her tolerance towards vampires. But after spending many occasions with them, he was almost always by Cassie’s side and aid during her life-and-death-psychic travels and encounters.

Great Revelation. The term used to describe the day vampires went out from their coffins and declared their existence  to the world. Since the Japanese had perfected synthetic bloods which make good alternatives as to feeding directly on humans, vampires became open to public.

It’s been years since the revelation and vampires are still able to mainstream with humans.

Sookie has been a long time waitress in a bar in a small town called Bon Temps, in Lousisiana. She’s a telepath. She can hear human thoughts but not that of vampires – fuzzy among other supernaturals. Her boss, Sam Merlotte, is a shapeshifter ( he can change to any animal form but prefers a collie) and has been trying to confess his true feelings for Sookie. But before he could do it, Sookie met the first vampire to ever come to the bar…

Bill Compton was a civil war veteran. Sookie instantly fell attracted to Bill -’the mental silence’, saiving her life and being a good vampire citizen. They became lovers in time.

Sometime during a visit to a vampire bar called Fangtasia, Sookie met Eric Northman, the bar-owner and high ranking Viking vampire – the Sheriff of Area 5.

As a result of many untoward circumstances and twists of events, Sookie and Eric had developed an intimate relationship and an extremely strong blood bond.  As a matter of fact, most of the books are teeming with Eric-Sookie love affair. Although Sookie did also had a relationship with a weretiger, Quinn but did not last long; and an attraction to a werewolf named Alcide which did not push through.

In aftermath, Sookie, the telepath is totally surrounded and embraced by the supernatural world- blood-bound and pledged to vampire Eric, former lover of vampire Bill and weretiger Quinn, a ‘friend of the Shreveport pack’ headed by Alcide, works for Sam the shapeshifter, sister to a half werepanther, Jason, part time employee to Vampire Queen of Louisiana, Sophie-Anne Leclerq and great grandaughter to a Fairy Prince, Niall Brigant.

But what I love most about the series is the great amount of adventure and confrontations Sookie and the gang had encountered and endured. I like strong heroines, that is.

Definitely worth reading!

Book 10, Dead in the Family, will be released May 2010.
