Just like any other form of entertainment, animes is divided into different genres too.

Now, the right anime for you will depend on the genre you’d like to watch.

Here’s a quick list of the genres:

Action- A battle or a two. War and combat fighting plays a great amount of the story line.  Dragon Ball Z, Ghost Fighter, Flame  of recca, Chrono Crusade, Naruto

Comdey – Just like a comic genre, a lot of funny and amusing events. School Rumble, Slayers

Drama – Maybe a real-life event, self-discovery, etc.  Pretty heavy situations with particular emotional involvement. Aria, Gokusen, .hack//SIGN

Horror – Alright, having a plot depicting great fear or disgust. Requiem from the Darkness, Blood: The Last Vampire, Elfen Lied, Pet Shop of Horrors

Mystery – Mostly, detectives or alike are major actors of the series since it involves puzzling event or even solving crimes. Detective Conan, High School Mystery Gakuen Nana Fushigi

Romance – Characters having love interests and affairs. Ayashi No Ceres, Kare Kano, Karin

Science Fiction – The story is based on a futuristic events and sometimes improbable fiction and technological developments and contact with alien worlds. Ghost in the Shell, Cowboy Bebop

Mecha – Particularly, robot animes. The famous Gundam Wing,  Vision of Escaflowne, Voltes V

Harem – Very interesting theme, where guy is surrounded , even pursued, by a lot of girls. Love Hina, Ah! My Goddess

Maho Shojo- Main female characters having supernatural abilitites. Card Captor Sakura, Sailor Moon

Maho Shonen- The counterpart for Maho Shojo. This time the male characters possess the magical powers.  DN Angel, Dragon Ball Z

Shojo – for young girls anime. Boys Over Flowers, Magic Knight Rayearth, Marmalade Boy

Shonen – for young boys anime. Hunter X Hunter, Yu-Gi-Oh, Astroboy


Although a lot of anime storylines are mixed of different genres, perhaps, it could be Romance, Comedy Shojo and many others.

Or simply, comic books in japanese style. They are usually printed in black and white and read from right to left.

Just as anime is for cartoons, manga is for comic books.

A lot of anime series are adaptations from their manga version.
